The benefits of skin-to-skin beyond the hospital
Share
Skin-to-skin time often feels most natural right after birth, when everything is new and tender. As everyday routines begin to take over, it might seem like something that can wait. But making space for this special time—whenever you can—is truly worthwhile.
The benefits for your baby are remarkable. Skin-to-skin contact helps their digestive system mature, reduces crying, improves sleep, supports healthy weight gain, boosts immunity, and even enhances brain development.
And it’s not just for babies—if you’re feeling low, overwhelmed, or anxious (which most new parents do at some point), skin-to-skin also helps release oxytocin—the feel-good hormone that can lift your mood and bring a sense of calm.
Here are some lovely ways to enjoy skin-to-skin time:
Have a bath together
Sharing a warm bath with your baby can be a deeply soothing experience. Lay out towels on the floor within easy reach before you get in. If you can, have someone nearby to help you and your baby out afterward.
Use a space heater
A small heater can make the bathroom extra cozy—but always keep it at a safe distance from the tub.
Try a gentle baby massage
If your baby enjoys touch, a light massage with coconut oil or another baby-safe oil is a beautiful way to connect. Use older towels, as oils can stain. Start from your baby’s chest and work your way out to the arms and legs. The loving connection is what matters most—no need to perfect a technique.
During feeding time
Feeding your baby while they're in just a diaper, with your shirt off and a blanket around your shoulders, creates a perfect moment for skin-to-skin. Before you start, grab water, use the bathroom, and gather anything you might want nearby—just in case your little one drifts off and you want to stay snuggled in.
Incorporate it into tummy time
Skin-to-skin can also be a part of tummy time, especially once your baby has been fed and is feeling content.
